HAIL MARY PASS: Episode 1 of THE TIME PATRIOT series

One Civil War. One dying republic. One founding father. One impossible Ask.

America is one spark away from civil war. The only man who can help has been dead for 237 years.

In 2037, the United States is tearing itself apart. Political corruption has hollowed out every institution the Founding Fathers built, citizens no longer trust their government, and the Midwest is armed and waiting. President Wade Harrison has tried every conventional solution available to him. Now he is asking Colonel Marc McKnight and the HERO team to do something no one has ever attempted.

Travel to 1787. Find George Washington. Bring him back with you.

McKnight opposes the mission from the first briefing. The risks are extraordinary, the odds of success are low, and a single mistake could erase the nation they are trying to save. But if he refuses, Harrison will give the mission to someone with less experience and no idea what can go wrong. McKnight takes the command.

Finding Washington is only the beginning of the problem.

The team drops into the cold Virginia mountains two months before the Constitutional Convention, armed with weapons Washington cannot explain, technology that looks like sorcery in his frame of reference, and and a copy of a constitution he has not yet seen. Washington is exactly as sharp and cautious as his reputation suggests. Convincing him that they arrived from 250 years in his future requires demonstration after demonstration, complete honesty, and the patience to answer questions from one of history’s most strategic minds.

Then a body turns up on the perimeter of their camp. Young. Recently dead. Carrying a brand new Luger pistol and Nazi credentials dated 1935.

Someone else has a time machine. And they reached 1787 first.

Hail Mary Pass is Episode 1 of the Time Patriot series by Kim Megahee, set in the world of the HERO team adventures. The mission to bring Washington forward has already been compromised by forces the team has not yet identified. The founding of America is the most important moment in history. Someone else is already there.

One republic. One founding father. One last chance to get it right.

Dear Reader,

Thanks for taking the time to learn more about Hail Mary Pass: Episode 1 of The Time Patriot adventure series.

First, I wanted to say that this book was named long before the book Hail Mary by another author.

This series idea came out of the blue. Let me tell you the story.

I had already written four other time travel adventure books (Time Limits, The Time Twisters, Time Revolution, and Time Plague). I was trying to brainstorm a new plot. It happened by chance.

Martha and I are news-junkies. TV News is playing on at least two TVs in our house whenever we are home.

Do you ever yell at the talking heads or the politicians on the news? We do it all the time.

One day I was exceptionally irritated by a commentary, so I stood up and vented. I asked what I thought was a rhetorical question.

“What do you think our forefathers would think,” I asked, “if they knew what we have done with this grand experiment of theirs into a constitutional republic form of government?”

Martha said, “Well, you’ve got a time machine. Why don’t you go ask them?”

That got my brain rolling and the plot finally formed in my weak brain. It triggered several weeks of research into George Washington to see what he was really like.

By almost all accounts, Washington was a shrewd, suspicious, and cautious businessman with a mighty sense of fairness. If he lived today, he would be Customer Service’s worst nightmare. Most of the time, I believe, he was concerned about getting cheated. He was a good steward of his money, but also the inheritance of Martha’s two children from her first marriage.

My endeavor in this first episode was to give Washington the respect he deserves but help the reader see him as a human man with faults. I hope I succeeded.

How do you convince a man from the 1700s that you’re from the future? That was McKnight’s big challenge in this first episode. Let me know if you think his solution would be effective in real life.

Thanks for browsing my website.
Cheers,
Kim

Overall Assessment

The Time Patriot: Hail Mary Pass is a solid, fast-paced entry in the “modern military team in the past” subgenre of time-travel fiction. Its central strength is a clear, high-stakes premise: a reluctant Ranger team must recruit George Washington to 2037 before Nazi time travelers can erase the Constitution. That single hook drives nearly every scene and keeps the story focused.

The manuscript leans heavily on core tropes that define its identity—Time Travel, Military Special Forces Team, Historical Figures as Characters, Tech vs. Primitive Weapons, and Hail Mary Pass. These feel natural together and give the book a strong genre signature. The military details (tactics, weapons handling, team banter) are confident and believable, which helps ground the more fantastical elements. The decision to show Washington as a shrewd, cautious leader rather than a saint adds welcome texture.

The balance between Core and Supporting tropes works well overall. Character and Plot categories dominate appropriately for a mission-driven story, while Relationship and Meta tropes stay light and functional. The manuscript stays comfortably inside genre expectations (Genre Consistency: high) while adding a small twist with the political “recruit the Founder” goal (Freshness Factor: moderate). This combination should appeal to readers who enjoy 1632-style tech advantage stories and military SF teams that respect chain of command and historical figures.
